How Much is One Billion Dollars?

05/18/2025

Will it make you rich? How long will it last if you spend voraciously

Have you ever fantasised about what would you do if you chanced upon just 1 billion dollars? Edwin Castro was totally unsuspecting when he won 2.4 billion in California, November 2022.

Let's fantasise now. Laws of Attraction are very real, or so I have heard..!

Most people have no idea how much 1 billion is. Have you?

Let's find out. And you are going to be shocked!

To begin with, you cannot count them. If few millions were missing you just wouldn't know and wouldn't care. If you dropped a few bills it would't even be worth picking them up. That's the problem with so much cash!

  1. Manually counting one billion will take you 31.7 years without sleeping, eating, and bathroom breaks! Just pure counting.
  2. Stacking them in one pile if the bills are in 100 $ denomination would make a stack of 1.09 kilometres high.
  3. If you stack them in $1 bills you will enter space. Space begins at 100 km and your stack would be 109.435 km!
  4. Your one billion will weigh the same as two adult elephants!
  5. One briefcase will only be able to accommodate 1 million. So, you will need one thousand briefcases.
  6. Without the briefcase it will weigh 10 tons.
  7. You will need 250–500 armoured trucks, since one truck can only transport 2–4 million safely.
  8. To keep them safe you will need security guards and military grade operation.
  9. If you decided to burn each 100 $ bill one by one it will take you 347 days of non-stop burning which is close to one year.
  10. If you flush one bill per second down the toilet, you will need to non-stop flush for 115 days. Dumping all of it in a river will be easier but it might cause a minor flood and a major riot.

That's quite a lot of money. Still not convinced? Here is a crazy calculation to convince you

One billion dollar is 1,000,000,000, right?

If you spend 1000 Dollars per hour it will finish in 1,000,000 hours.

1,000,000 hours are 41666.667 days.

41666.667 days are 114.15 years.

And you are already 20/30/40 or more years old. Means you don't have as many years to live as you have money to spend.

Or

You will be able to spend 100,000 everyday continuously for 27 years and there will still be some left.

Now, that's rich!

So, what do you do when you want to spend your 1 billion faster? Here are your options:

  1. Buy 20 ultra luxury houses in Manhattan, Beverly Hills costing approximately 50 million each. Your 1 billion is gone the minute you sign all twenty registries. But the money you will start making with rent will overtime multiply your 1 billion.
  2. Alternatively you could buy 200–500 luxury houses costing approximately 2 million each. But it is still hard to become poor for you. The rent begins to multiply your investment like crazy.
  3. Buy gold. Current price of gold is 2,350 per ounce. So 1 kilogram of gold will cost you 75,565 Dollars. Your one billion can buy you 13,327 kilograms of gold or 13.02 tons. Now your 1 billion is gone but you are still richer as gold prices continuously increase and are a solid investment.
  4. Buy a private island. Coupled with a private jet you are all set to lead the life of a very rich man.
  5. Buy businesses. With 1 billion under your belt you will be able to buy off several high profit businesses or companies. Your paid staff will run them like machine gears and money starts rolling in making you a billionaire yet again.
  6. Or start your own company from that old crazy idea or dream you always had. A tree that can talk, chair that can fly, Magenta land where everything is just pink, or a chocolate house where everything is made of chocolates and bonbons. Everything is possible.
  7. Donating is also on the cards if you are still undecided. Donating to family and friends will only give you swooning family and friends, but donating them to causes nearer your heart will really help them.

Your best, healthiest and cleverest option would be to combine all of the above suggestions together.

Having so much money that one doesn't need can be a great luck or a great curse depending on how one behaves with it.
People have become billionaires from nothing and people have turned nothing from being a billionaire once.

When we don't have money, we work hard for it which gives us a strong sense of purpose and a mission, which in turn keeps us healthy and active. When we have too much money and nothing to do we lose our sense of purpose and mission, and fall into emptiness of existance feeling useless, and hollow.

This is one reason why so many wealthy people report feeling miserable…!

But that's just my opinion. Thanks for reading!
